GRISAILLE
ABOUT
Grisaille (pronounced GREEZ-eye) is a single-color artwork. That one color is done in light and dark tones on a neutral background. A Grisaille portrait can be any color, for example the woman in shades of burgundy, or the man in shades of blue. Traditionally grisaille is done in black, white, and shades of grey like the Border Collie.
I believe Grisailles are a very under-appreciated portrait type. They can be very beautiful while at the same time keeping the cost down.
A Grisaille portrait can portray a human, dog, cat, horse, or any combination of those. It can be a head study, or a full-body portrait.
